Great ENTERPRISE

This year Ms. Mc Colgans enterprise class took part in the TY mini-company module in which they needed to set up and run a small business. With large numbers this year the class was split into two groups, Quench Patrol and Lupo Lad’s. Both companies designed a product which they then sold in the hope of making a profit. Quench Patrol sold personalised sports water bottles, while Lupo Lad’s sold iPod/mp3 chargers. The standard of both companies was very high with all participants putting a lot of effort towards, marketing and selling their product, writing out reports and accounts, and preparing their stalls. This would prove vital in order to impress the judges in the two competitions the companies were entered in.

All Ireland, Tullamore Offally (C.E.B. Competition)
The first competition was the County Monaghan Enterprise Final run by the Monaghan C.E.B (County Enterprise Board). On the 4th March both companies set up their stalls in the Four Seasons Hotel, hoping to impress the judges and secure a place in the All Ireland final. Both teams did extremely well with Quench Patrol coming first and receiving €300, while Lupo Lad’s not far behind won second place and €200. Quench Patrol will now go on to represent Co. Monaghan in the finals which will be held in the Osprey Hotel, Naas, Co. Kildare on the 28th of April.

All Ireland Naas Co. Kildare
There was more success for the teams at the regional finals of the mini-company “Get Up and Go” competition, organised by the transition year S.L.S.S (Second Level Support Service), which took place in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal on 11th March. Twenty six teams competed for 1st, 2nd or 3rd in five categories: Marketing, Originality of Idea, Best Accounts, Best Stand, and Quality of Product. Despite the tough competition both teams between them managed to take home three trophies for the school. Lupo Lad’s won third place for Best Accounts, while Quench Patrol received first prize for their Marketing and
second for Originality of Idea. This means that Quench Patrol will proceed to the National finals in the Osprey Hotel on 28th April.

Overall both companies did extremely well and all students involved have thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far. Both teams have gained valuable skills such as planning, organising and team work and have learned a lot about the difficulties and fulfilment of setting up and running a business. They would highly recommend the module to up-coming fourth years and given the chance would definitely to do it again.
