TY Academics have included a Geography trip to Dublin to link up with Irish Aid and an Environmental Awareness Project. Some students are learning Mandarin. Efforts are being made to prioritise the academic studies of TY students as part of their preparation for the Leaving Certificate.
TY Science and Maths
In the RDS at the BT Young Scientists competition Ultan O’ Rourke and Louis Madden’s work on the DNA profile of Irish vs Spanish strawberry tree led to a well-deserved first place in their category. This means that both students will attend a BT boot camp for the development of their ideas as a business concept. Meanwhile Darragh Todd and Oisin Lavelle’s work on the effect of red LED light on the photosynthesis of plants was highly commended, making it two in a row at the BY Young Scientists Competition for this highly achieving scientific pair of students. Oisin Lavelle has been accepted to study biochemistry in Trinity College as part of their TY outreach programme.
The Annual Science Outreach Programme to local primary schools gave TY Science students the opportunity to prepare lessons and experiments and visit local primary schools where they taught scientific concepts. The primary school students were invited with their teachers to visit our labs to conduct more experiments. In October Higher level maths students completed the Project Maths Trial at Castle Saunderson as well as attending other maths events and competitions.
